Good morning!
I have to say, I did not see this one coming!
At last night’s Fort Walton Beach city council meeting, the council declined BLN LLC’s offer to continue to lease the 30-space parking lot that sits next to Run With It.
According to the Northwest Florida Daily News, after BLN bought the property in September, the company proposed changing the monthly lease to $1,650.
The city’s previous lease agreement with the Tringas Family for the parking lot has been roughly $271 per month since 1975.
If you have no idea what parking lot I am talking about, it’s the lot between Run With It and BOTE/The Boardroom Pub. See, the city owns the half that’s next to BOTE. When BLN LLC bought the Run With It building along with the movie theatre and other buildings, it acquired the 30-space parking lot as well.
According to the report from the NWFDN, a motion was made to table the lease offer until staff could study whether the city needs the 30 parking spaces and whether the proposed lease amount is reasonable in today’s market. The motion died for a lack of a second.
But here’s the thing: BLN could block off parking.
I mean, it technically would be a private parking and City Manager Michael Beedie was quoted as saying,
“If they wanted to, they could put up a fence and block it off.”
The City of Fort Walton Beach is doing a lot right now and I can appreciate their efforts to be fiscally responsible. With focus on the new Landing Park and gearing up for the “Around the Mound” project, I can understand the reservations.
It will just be weird to not be able to park right next to Run With It if BLN decides to block off those 30 spaces to public parking.
Side note: Originally there was a proposal to buy the city’s half of the parking lot and then lease it back to them. But that was tabled as well.
So what do you think? Smart move by the City? Or was it a bad one? Hit reply and shoot me an email!
